Wall Mount Garage Door Openers: Are They Right for You?

Wall mount garage door openers are a relatively new type of opener that is becoming increasingly popular in the residential garage door space. They are mounted on the wall instead of the ceiling, which can be a great option for garages with high ceilings or limited space.  Does that mean these openers are "perfect" for you and your garage door needs?  Let's explore that idea.

Why Are They Called Wall Mount Garage Door Openers?

Instead of being mounted on the ceiling they are mounted on the wall, typically near the door itself.  They use a motor to drive a chain or belt that opens and closes the garage door. These direct drive openers turn the torsion tube that directly lifts and lowers the garage door.  Genius!

Advantages of Wall Mount Openers

There are several advantages to using a wall mount garage door opener.

  • Space-saving design: Ideal for garages with high ceilings or limited space. They can free up valuable overhead space that can be used for storage or other purposes.

  • Quieter operation: Typically, they are quieter because the motor is located closer to the ground, where there is less noise.

  • Increased headroom: This can be beneficial for tall vehicles or people who want to park their car closer to the wall.

  • Modern, sleek aesthetic: They complement the look of any garage.

Disadvantages of Wall Mount Openers

  • May not be compatible with all garage door types: They are not recommended for garages with low headroom or zero low headroom tracks.

  • Can be more expensive than traditional openers: Few hundred-dollar difference.

  • Installation may be more complex: It is often recommended to hire a professional to install a wall mount opener.

Track Radius

It’s important to consider the track radius; this is the distance from the wall to the center of the garage door track. Wall mount openers are typically only compatible with garage doors that have a track radius of 12" or higher. If you have a garage door with a track radius of less than 12", you will not be able to use a wall mount opener.

Installation and Maintenance

Consider hiring a professional; installation can be complex, and it is important to ensure that the opener is installed correctly.  Although there are a number of DIY options for the avid consumer, these openers do have a learning curve.

Once your wall mount opener is installed, it is important to maintain it properly. This includes lubricating the chain or belt, checking the sensors, and keeping the opener clean.
